West Plano yard sale report: the neighborhood sale

This week was a continuation of my search for end tables. But I also decided to try and find lamps for the living room. I have a pair of nice little lamps but, when I turn them on, the shade gets really hot. It looks like it's made of copper but it's really made of shell; I got them at a yard sale.

Rather than look online, I decided this week to just start driving. If you drive along Spring Creek or Park or Legacy, you'll eventually see signs. The first sign I saw went into Mission Ridge Road, where I saw two or three right near each other. I said, "Oh, is this a neighborhood thing?" It turned out to be a sale with 26 houses spread out over 15 roads in this one neighborhood. They were giving out a map, with each participating house outlined, and below each house, a list of what they were selling.

Add splashes of color to get rid of the winter doldrums

"It's like we just got all the holiday stuff put away, then I've been doing all this stuff to do with taxes, and I'm feeling like as soon as I'm done with all that, I really want to do some things for spring," says Diane Stege, co-owner of Eyedia in Louisville, Ky.

The first step to giving rooms a spring lift, she says, is to declutter. Get rid of all mail, magazines, gloves, etc., maintaining a chokehold on your rooms. Then seriously clean.

"That way, everything smells clean," she says.

Color correction

Winter, besides being so cold, is so monochromatic. Gray skies. Dirty snow. Dark branches. The antidote is color.

"Color is huge. It has such a big impact," says Lynn Shouse, owner of The French Chicken in Middletown, Ky.

She also helps clients redecorate with what they already own.

Community tells of shock over rape claim

CONCERNED residents today urged for improvements to street lighting after a report of a “shocking" rape of a man on a badly lit footpath. The victim, believed to be in his late 30s, was walking along Pram Walk, near the Ordinance roundabout at Felixstowe, when he is believed to have been attacked by another man.Anna Woolnough, Suffolk police spokeswoman, said: “Police are currently investigating a complaint of rape made by a man aged in his late 30s.“The man had been at the Band Box nightclub when he left in the early hours of the morning and walked towards the Ordinance roundabout.“Another male, who was waiting in Pram Lane, raped him. The victim then returned to Band Box where he met with friends. “He later contacted police and reported the incident."Scenes of Crime Officers (SOCO) cordoned off the area for several hours while they gathered evidence yesterday. As police today continued their investigations, stunned residents called for more lighting on the dimly lit passageway.

New lawn mowers easier on older generation

We Americans have a love affair with our lawns. Our desire to have at least some portion of our yards devoted to that lush green carpet of grass apparently still justifies the sacrifices we are willing to take to make it so.

For starters, lawns require a great deal of water, chemicals and, especially, time to keep them looking their best. And the physical act of mowing commands much of that.

Yet in spite of technological, time-saving improvements, a small group of ambitious souls still choose to cut their lawns using an updated version of the old motor-less, push reel mower. In fact, they are even making a comeback in some market segments.

Although certainly not time-saving, they are a great way to combine the benefit of physical exercise while minimizing the environmental impact of noise and air pollution for which gas powered mowers are known.
