Childproofing your home

Tisha Hughes remembered the "defining moment" when she knew it was time to step up childproofing her home to protect her 10-month-old son, Cameron.

Cameron, a proficient crawler who's mastered the art of pulling himself up to stand while holding onto furniture, was puttering around the dining room one day when he decided to use a chair to help him stand.

"When he pulled up on the chair, it fell backward and hit him on the forehead," she recalled. Fortunately, Cameron wasn't injured. But his mother was "pretty freaked out" by the incident.

Soon after, the Hugheses had a big garage sale.

Many of the decorative items in their Modesto home - including tablecloths, sconces, candles, floor lamps and a curio cabinet filled with commemorate shot glasses - were now seen as potential hazards for Cameron, so out they went.

Council wants to shed light

One compact fluorescent lamp will be provided for each household in Irvine, paid for by Southern California Edison.

The bulbs – compared to regular, incandescent bulbs – last six to 10 times longer, use 75 percent less energy and reduce carbon emissions by 285 kg per bulb per year.

The city began giving out compact fluorescent lamps in 1999 and since then has distributed 8,500 bulbs. The new effort will distribute a total of 60,000 bulbs in classrooms and at events such as UC Irvine Earth Day and the Woodbridge Street Fair.

The city's ramped-up effort was inspired by a letter received by Councilman Sukhee Kang from www.18seconds.org/ – a project by Yahoo and AC Nielson to encourage Americans to use CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps).

SIMPLY SENSATIONAL SPRING SHOES: FEMININE STYLES

Though she's now known as a celebrity stylist with her own Web site (TheStyleDoctor.com) and makes regular "house calls" on television shows such as "The View," La Morte grew up in Lacey.

"You get used to a certain style, it's comfortable, it looks OK so you stay with that style and that color," she says, expressing the mind-set of the average Jane.

But, La Morte, who divides her time between New York and Los Angeles, says most ladies would do well to consider adding something different to their shoe wardrobe.

"You're hearing a lot about flats for spring but these have been in women's wardrobes for a while. We've seen them before," she says. "The styles that seem freshest to me are the wood platform, the wood wedge and cork heels and wedges. Those are the must-have shoes to get your hands on this season."

Of course, the platforms and wedges have been around for a couple of seasons.

DePaul University Revamps In-Classroom Audio/Video System with ...

MAHWAH, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Utilizing a unique method for projector management, DePaul University recently installed Sharp Electronics' XG-PH50X DLP® professional networkable projectors in classrooms throughout the campus. In an effort to simplify professors' presentations, alleviate technical problems in the classroom and reduce costs, the university's IT department is overseeing the projector installation and overall use, which is a departure from traditional A/V department management. During the past year, the university purchased more than 200 Sharp projectors, based on positive feedback from the IT department and faculty members.

"We evaluated many different models based on network capability, size, theft deterrent features and reliability," said Joseph Salwach, assistant vice president, Information Services at DePaul University.

Government Splits VRA

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has been split into two entities to pave the way for the active participation of independent power producers (IPPs) in the power sector.

Consequently, the government has incorporated the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) and appointed a Chief Executive Officer, Mr Joseph Wiafe, an electrical engineer, to begin the process of setting up a transmission entity separate from the VRA.

The VRA will maintain its function as a power generator.

The Minister of Energy, Mr Joseph Kofi Adda, stated this at a partnership training programme for Ghanaian and American regulatory utility commissioners in Accra yesterday.

The two-day training programme is sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID.
