| West Plano yard sale report: the neighborhood sale
This week was a continuation of my search for end tables. But I also decided to try and find lamps for the living room. I have a pair of nice little lamps but, when I turn them on, the shade gets really hot. It looks like it's made of copper but it's really made of shell; I got them at a yard sale. Rather than look online, I decided this week to just start driving. If you drive along Spring Creek or Park or Legacy, you'll eventually see signs. The first sign I saw went into Mission Ridge Road, where I saw two or three right near each other. I said, "Oh, is this a neighborhood thing?" It turned out to be a sale with 26 houses spread out over 15 roads in this one neighborhood. They were giving out a map, with each participating house outlined, and below each house, a list of what they were selling.

The Army has been given the green light to offer retention bonuses of $20,000 to selected captains in return for a three-year service commitment. The special incentive is believed to be the first of its kind ever offered commissioned officers. Implementing guidance such as eligibility rules and application procedures had not been finalized by press time. However, sources indicated earlier that senior leaders want to launch the program May 1. When approved, implementation details will be announced by the officer directorate of Human Resources Command in a worldwide message. Called a Critical Skills Retention Bonus, the incentive is similar to the bonuses available to senior NCOs and warrant officers in high-priority specialties and career fields.

Bank on Carolina
If I had Aladdin's lamp for only a day, I'd make a wish and here's what I'd say: Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning. Indeed, North Carolina is a fine place to be in the afternoons and evenings as well. For a short-haul trip from the Washington area, North Carolina has long been a favorite — especially its Outer Banks. Whalebone, N.C., south of Kill Devil Hill, is 278 miles from Washington, so the Outer Banks is a good place to start a visit. What we call the Outer Banks received its first known rave reviews in the 1580s after Sir Walter Raleigh sent explorers to check out the sounds and estuaries alongside the area that is now North Carolina's playground by the sea.
