Wary of Blago's tax plan
Local business leaders are calling on state lawmakers to stop Gov. Rod Blagojevich from passing his proposed tax on businesses, predicting consumers are the ones who ultimately would have to foot the bill. Unveiled last month, Blagojevich's gross receipts tax would require the state's service industries to pay 1.95 percent in tax for every transaction made and manufacturers, construction, retailers and wholesalers to pay .85 percent. Opposition has come from state Republicans, Democrats and civil rights activists such as the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who says the tax would be detrimental to Illinois entrepreneurs. .
Replace conventional light switches with dimmers
Replacing conventional light switches with dimmers can help you set a nice mood lighting. However, dimmer switches won't work with all light bulbs. Dimmer switches are available in several styles. The least expensive ones are dial-shaped knobs. They cost around $1.75. With knobs, "you have to adjust the light (level) every time you turn it on," said Doug Beach, the store manager at Lamps Plus in Fresno, Calif. "You also have to click it off to be sure the lights are off." There also are dimmers that look like standard light switches. Some allow you to gradually toggle up and down for different degrees of light. If your other switches are the standard-toggle ones, these dimmers will blend right in, he says. However, you still have to adjust the light level when you turn them on and make sure they're clicked off.
EPA to Present Special Award to City of Springfield and City ...
Springfield, Mo., residents will be able to breathe easier thanks to two projects undertaken by the City Utilities of Springfield and the city. These entities will receive a special award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7, for their efforts to protect the air quality of the Springfield region as part of the Blue Skyways Collaborative. EPA representative Amy Bhesania will present the Blue Skyways Collaborative partnership award to Springfield Mayor Thomas J. Carlson during the seventh Annual Springfield/Greene County Choose Environmental Excellence luncheon at noon Friday, April 21, 2007, at the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce as a part of Springfields Earth Day festivities. The city has partnered with the City Utilities to completely replace all incandescent traffic signal lights with LED lamps.
The Kitty Carlisle Hart I knew
We met by accident at a newspaper editor's convention in St. Paul, Minn., in 1989. She was to be one side in a debate over federal funding for the arts. She was for it. Her opponent was against it. Except, her debating partner's plane was delayed, and so the host editor called me. "You've got to help me by stepping in," said Ronald Clark, who, at the time, was the editorial page editor for the St. Paul newspaper. "Are you nuts?" I said. "I'm not prepared and I certainly am not going to debate an old lady, especially one with her standing." He persevered and I relented. I was somewhere else in town and had to come back to the convention site. By the time I arrived, she had begun her presentation. It was worse than I had anticipated -- not her presentation, but the obstacles I faced.
