Sufficient identification

In identifying an offender, is it necessary that the witness has seen him actually commit the crime? This is the issue raised by Nanding in the charge of murder and frustrated murder filed against him.

The charges against Nanding also known as "utak" in their neighborhood stems from the shooting to death of Mando and the wounding of the latter's wife Perla.

According to Perla, at about 11:00 o'clock in the evening of April 15, 2000, she was on the way home aboard a passenger jeepney driven by her husband Mando, the deceased victim in this case. Perla said that as she and her young granddaughter were alighting from the jeepney, she heard two successive gunshots. She heard the first gunshot while helping her granddaughter get off the jeepney and instinctively looked at her husband whom she saw lying face down on the steering wheel.

HP Scanjet G4050

Home scanners have shown little technical innovation over the past few years. However, HP's Scanjet G4050 has broken the mould with the first so-called six-colour scanner, using two lamps to provide RGB feedback plus extra colour information.Image quality, as we'd expect on a scanner costing over $500, is excellent. Colour handling was accurate in all of our tests, whether we were scanning reflective photographic media or transparent negatives and slides – results were truly of archive quality. Our only complaint is speed: at 300dpi, there are no problems, with a 6 x 4in photo previewing in seven seconds and scanning in 11. However, switching to six-colour scanning (turned off by default) increased time exponentially to nearly one-and-a-half minutes, with no proportional increase in accuracy or image quality.

EAC reassures public over mercury fears in low energy bulbs

THE ELECTRICITY Authority of Cyprus yesterday reassured people that newer, energy-efficient light bulbs, which contain tiny amounts of mercury, pose no danger to the public. Mercury is poisonous, but its also a necessary part of most compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFL) the kind that environmentalists and some governments are pushing as a way to cut energy use. Mercury is probably best known for its effects on the nervous system. In the classic childrens book Alice in Wonderland, the character of the Mad Hatter was based on a 19th century anecdote that hat makers who were continually exposed to the toxin went a little crazy. Mercury can also damage the kidneys and liver and, in sufficient quantities, can cause death. Manufacturers and environmentalists note that because CFLs require less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs, they reduce overall carbon in the atmosphere by cutting emissions from coal-fired power plants.
