Lights may improve road's safety

A township redevelopment project will add lights to a stretch of road that has been the site of five pedestrian deaths within the last decade.

The 15-acre project will bring street lamps to an area of Route 130 that was known as Motel Row. The motels there were demolished and the land will be developed into age-restricted condominiums.

Since 1996, five people have been killed on 130 from Highland Avenue to Riverton Road, according to Cinnaminson police. Also, 38 accidents with 18 injuries occurred in the area, according to state Department of Transportation's preliminary numbers for last year.

While the street lamps will help illuminate the area, township officials said the deaths were primarily caused by lack of caution along the six-lane, north-south highway that serves as a major artery running from Trenton through Gloucester County.

Bentley: I'll put Lamps in the shade

DAVID Bentley is ready to prove he's worthy of an England call-up by putting Frank Lampard and his Chelsea team-mates in the shade at Old Trafford tomorrow.

The former Arsenal star, who has been in outstanding form for Blackburn this season, has regularly been touted for a senior international call-up by his manager Mark Hughes.

So far, England boss Steve McClaren has decided to ignore Bentley's claims, despite the midfielder earning rave reviews for some dazzling performances for Blackburn and England's Under 21s.

However, the 22-year-old knows the clamour for his inclusion in the senior squad will become overwhelming if he can out-shine Lampard and Co as Rovers attempt to reach the FA Cup final for the first time since 1960.

Bentley, who is likely to be up against England defender Ashley Cole tomorrow, said: "Playing at Old Trafford in a semi-final is a great chance for me to show what I can do.

Hippy chic

But hippy chic is only one element of the island's cultural heritage. "Ibiza has seen a steady influx of visitors to its shores for thousands of years," says Grimshaw. "From the Greeks and the Phoenicians [who founded Ibiza Town] to the Byzantines and Moors, it has always been this rich melting pot."

The island's ability to absorb new influences is still much in evidence. From restored traditional farmhouses (some of which have now been turned into agrotourismo hotels) to colourful Moroccan-themed stone fincas and modernist glass cubes, a dramatic mix of tastes and cultures exist happily side by side.

Perched on a clifftop on a stretch of the coast overlooking the rocky outcrop of Es Verda island in the south-west, Casa Inspiration is one such tribute to contemporary, purist design.

Slow start for Nigerian elections

Landmark Nigerian presidential polls have begun shakily after problems in getting recently printed ballot papers to the 120,000 polling stations.

Voting failed to begin as scheduled in much of the country, even though the start was delayed by two hours.

Printing issues meant voting papers for the landmark poll did not arrive from South Africa until Friday evening.

An overnight attack on election HQ in Abuja failed when a petrol tanker laden with detonators failed to explode.

The election should result in the first transfer of power between civilian presidents since independence - but BBC reporters across the country are reporting numerous problems.

Voting began on time in some parts of Katsina, home of two of the main presidential candidates, but near an election office youths burnt down several shacks, expressing frustration and anger at problems in getting election materials there.
