| The smoking lamp is lit
The Ohio Veterans of Foreign Wars won the right to light up in their posts re cently, but that doesn't mean that they should start blowing smoke. Bill Seagraves, the VFW's state commander, seems to agree. He said he would urge the VFW's 428 posts to establish smoking and nonsmoking spaces inside. The Ohio Department of Health made an understandable call when it decided to exempt nonprofit private clubs from the ban, as long as everyone present is a member, including employees. Anti-smoking advocates aren't pleased, and we can understand their disapproval. Ohioans voted overwhelmingly in November to outlaw smoking in public spaces. But the VFW is not a public place when it serves as a meeting hall for members only. And when it does have a public event or has youngsters 18 or under present, the new rules say cigarettes and cigars must go out, said health officials.

PhotoFluor Light Source
ROCKINGHAM, Vt., April 3, 2007 -- Optical filter maker Chroma Technology has introduced the PhotoFluor, a next-generation high output light source for fluorescence microscopy that combines a powerful metal halide lamp with a sputtered heat-blocking optic to deliver excellent light output across the spectrum from 340 nm to 650 nm. With emphasis on power in the ultraviolet (UV) range, the PhotoFluor allows bright imaging of DAPI, Hoechst and other UV-absorbing fluorochromes, as well as those with higher excitation wavelengths, including Cy5. According to Chroma Technology, the PhotoFluor combines a powerful light engine that minimizes the need for alignment with quiet operation, and can increase the throughput of light-limited applications like spinning disk confocals. An innovative power management strategy ensures long lamp life (2000 hours) with minimal decrease in lamp output over time and less fluctuation during experiments.
Shanghai Auto Show: LIVE shots of the Chery Shooting Sport
Our colleagues at Autoblog Chinese have just provided us with our first live look of the Chery Shooting Sport concept, which is one of more than a few cars at the Shanghai Auto Show this year that proves Chinese design is evolving. The three-door hatch does have a Prius-esqe front end, as we noted earlier, though it's more inspired by the Toyota hybrid's design than outright aping it. Otherwise, the design of the Shooting Sport is an exercise in restraint compared to many concept designs we've seen come out of China in the past few years. We particularly like the car's very tidy rear end, which locates the stop lamps up and to the side of the hatch glass. This leaves the sheetmetal below smooth and free of interruptions, much like the back end of the soon-to-be-cancelled Ford Focus ZX3 hatchback. This is also our first glimpse of the Shooting Sport concept's interior.
