Dutch Philips beats Q1 profit forecast, sales slow

Dutch Philips Electronics beat analysts' forecasts on Monday with a first-quarter operating profit, but sales were below expectations due to slower TV and monitor sales as well as Latin American weakness.

Philips's earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) came in at 292 million euros ($395.6 million) compared with an average forecast of 267 million euros by 15 analysts polled by Reuters. EBIT in the year-earlier period was 335 million euros.

Revenues fell more than expected to 5.99 billion euros from 7.37 billion euros a year earlier, and compared with an average analyst forecast of 6.14 billion euros.

Philips is the world's biggest lighting maker, a top three hospital equipment maker and a top five consumer electronics producer.

Sales and profits were hit by the sale of the company's semiconductor business late last year, and on a comparable basis EBIT increased by 46 million euros.

Man forgets wife

A Chinese man says he has forgotten his wife following a motorbike accident. Wei Guangyi, of Xinyang City, Henan province, initially suffered total amnesia after hitting a lamp post. But, after two days in hospital, he could remember everything - except his wife of nine years.

Yang said: He remembers the names of people whove visited him, and information about his work. But he pointed at me and asked my daughter, Who is this woman? I was so surprised to hear that.

I showed him our wedding picture and asked who was beside him. He told me, Thats my classmate. When he is changing, he pushes me out of the room, and tells me every time that I shouldnt cook for him, since Im a guest of his house.

The chief surgeon at Xinyang 1st Hospital says the phenomenon is inexplicable.

Rangers serve notice with sweep

The New York Rangers entered the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs as one of the bottom seeds in the East, but they also came into the postseason as one of the NHL's hottest clubs down the stretch, winning eight of their last 11 regular season games and posting a 13-3-4 record in their last 20. The Rangers finished up the 2006-07 campaign as one of only four NHL teams to earn 30 total points since the Feb. 27 trade deadline.

West Plano yard sale report: the neighborhood sale

This week was a continuation of my search for end tables. But I also decided to try and find lamps for the living room. I have a pair of nice little lamps but, when I turn them on, the shade gets really hot. It looks like it's made of copper but it's really made of shell; I got them at a yard sale.

Rather than look online, I decided this week to just start driving. If you drive along Spring Creek or Park or Legacy, you'll eventually see signs. The first sign I saw went into Mission Ridge Road, where I saw two or three right near each other. I said, "Oh, is this a neighborhood thing?" It turned out to be a sale with 26 houses spread out over 15 roads in this one neighborhood. They were giving out a map, with each participating house outlined, and below each house, a list of what they were selling.
