Lamps supplier asks Ombudsman: Probe complainant

CEBU CITY -- A contractor of the multi-million-peso lampposts deal has turned the tables on Crisologo Saavedra, whose complaint provoked an anti-graft investigation on the allegedly overpriced purchase.

Engineer Dante Valencia, general manager of Gampik, asked the Office of the Ombudsman to investigate the Pelican Bay Group and Saavedra, its project manager, for its alleged failure to deliver 40 security cameras amounting to P79.9 million.

Saavedra, however, said that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) illegally rescinded his contract last November 29, because he did not give in to DPWH officials demand for a 15 percent kickback.

They are trying to justify the overpriced lampposts.

Shop and ski by the sea at Christmas?

A DRY ski slope in the heart of Weston could soon be the Christmas attraction which draws thousands of shoppers to the town centre over the festive season.Plans are taking shape to make the town one of the most unique places to experience Christmas in the region, with a ski slope on the Town Square off the High Street heading the list of attractions.Eventually, the Weston Town Centre Partnership, which is behind the project, would like to see the slope complemented by an ice-rink on Big Lamp Corner and possibly even a toboggan run during the Christmas season. The partnership is keen to make Weston stand out during the profitable run-up to Christmas and attract people into the town who might normally shop in other towns and cities in the South West. Its aims for this year include installing Christmas lights in Dolphin Square, St James Street and Big Lamp Corner, creating a grotto and children's show, holding themed evenings, introducing a Christmas lights scheme in the Orchard Meadows shopping area and holding a 'best dressed window' competition.Next year it hopes to bring in a dry ski slope for the Town Square and create a 'Winter Wonderland' with children's rides and a grotto.

Back to Baclaran

IT has taken Mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr. of Paraaque City years and the 2007 campaign to announce a thorough overhaul of Baclaran. The makeover is overdue.

In a statement, Bernabe said that his office would give Baclaran a major facelift by installing more street lamps, waiting sheds and public benches. The city will replace the sidewalks with brick pavements.

A specific street would also be assigned for a particular merchandise. For example, a road would sell only electronic ware, another footwear, and so on. The plan would give shoppers an easier time to find the product they are looking for, the mayor said.

Also on the drawing board is a parking area for private car owners. Public transports, such as jeepneys and tricycles, would be rerouted to avoid the chronic gridlock.
