| Las Piñas creates task force on groundwater contamination
The Las Piñas City government has created a task force that will be responsible for gathering water samples in areas of the city affected by the reported groundwater contamination. Jimi Castillano, the city's public information officer, said Philips Electronics and Lighting Philippines – which used to operate a plant near the affected areas – will head the task force that will send the water samples for testing abroad. Castillano said that apart from the city government, the other members of the task force are representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Health and the Maynilad Water Services Inc. 2008 Volvo S40 and V50 break cover!
Just days after the conclusion of media previews at the New York Auto Show, Volvo has lifted the lid on the revamped S40 and V50. While the overall look isn't dramatically different from the other recent Volvos, the cars' have been sufficiently refined to give both the sedan and wagon more distinctive appearances. The wagon gets a a slightly more muscular front bumper shape that fits in better with the larger XC models, while the sedan has a slimmer, sleeker look that bears more than a passing resemblance to the recently-introduced S80.The bigger changes show up inside of the cars, where a reworked design frees up new storage spaces, addressing one of the many complaints about the previous iterations. The door panels have been redone and a new space at the bottom of the center stack is now large enough for a letter-sized book.
Apache for kids
You may know Apache as the most popular web server, powering many of the internet's biggest sites. It's the A in LAMP, the gold standard in flexible open source architecture making web 2.0 scale cheaply. It's also a great way to teach your kids HTML. When my daughter wanted to learn how to build web pages, I found it to be the easiest way to get her up and running with a place to play on her own computer. Just go to the download section of apache.org and grab the latest version of the file labeled Win32 Binary (MSI Installer). It's a very easy install, don't worry about the settings along the way, you can always change them later. (Apologies but these are Windows instructions. Perhaps one of my colleagues can describe the Mac side of things) When the installer is done, you're up and running.
Invercargill hit and run leaves six injured
Invercargill police were kept busy overnight after a hit and run left a man seriously injured and five people were injured after a car and taxi collided. Sergeant Wing-Wah Ng said a man suffered broken legs and head injuries after a ute hit him as he was crossing a road in the city about 4:45am today. "This vehicle for whatever reason has run into him and then sped away." Mr Ng said the man's friends alerted police to the accident. The vehicle was believed to be a white double cab ute. Earlier a car with three or four occupants crashed into a lamp post after it was hit by a taxi about 3.50am today. Mr Ng said the car's speed was believed to have been a factor in the incident. Three people in the car suffered moderate injuries while the taxi driver and a passenger suffered minor injuries.
