Home truths - Winter warmer

During summer we look outward from our homes and include the garden and outdoor living spaces in our lifestyle as much as possible.

This often means that our scheme is simple, uncluttered, light and airy, making the most of the sun and summer light.

However, in winter we turn to the interior of our homes and try to shut out the dark and cold. We tend to go out less and our homes really need to become our haven. For many, the contrast between the wild and wet weather outside and the warmth of interior spaces is what winter is all about.

Comfort really is the catchphrase for winter living. We tend to be more indulgent and often less disciplined. Therefore the idea is to create the feel of smaller more intimate spaces where we can snuggle in for the night or relax during the weekend with a book.

Former coach and family leave items behind for auction

Maybe we should hold that question until after the first few games of the football season. But if you're having trouble filling the void the Jaw left in your soul, take heart: He's left something for you to remember him by.

In fact, he's left 134 lots of things, ranging from his pool table to his king-sized bed to his Steelers ice bucket. All will be auctioned beginning around noon April 28 at Dargate Auction Galleries in Point Breeze.

All of the items come from the 5,000-square-foot house in Fox Chapel that the former Steelers head coach shared with his wife, Kaye, and their three daughters. It's typical household stuff -- lamps, rugs, sofas, chairs, china, artwork -- the kind of things a family wouldn't bother to take if they were moving to, say, a $2.5 million, 7,400-square-foot house in Raleigh, N.C.

Logging Your Every Driving Moment

Did you know that the airbag control module in your car could be logging a whole lot of factors about your driving - including your speed? If the proliferation of speed cameras, redlight cameras and radars isn’t enough to make you drive carefully, perhaps that piece of news just might!

Think about it. If in a moment of inattention you collide with the back of another car, you won’t be able to say that you were braking hard – not if the electronic record shows that in fact you never even started to slow until the time of impact. Convicted by your car? – it’s more than just a possibility, with one such case having already occurred in the US. There a driver involved in a double fatality claimed he had been travelling at about 100 km/h. But the electronic record showed that in fact the speed of the car five seconds before impact was 184 km/h...
