10 cool tips

This Earth Day, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is urging residents to take action to help prevent climate change.

Here are 10 things everyone can do to help protect the planet from global warming:

Recycle as much waste as possible. For more local information on recycling drives, contact the Center for Ecological Technology at www.cetonline.org or (413) 445-4556.
Avoid products with excessive packaging — it could spare the planet 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
Drive less. Walk, ride your bike, carpool with a friend or take mass transit whenever possible.
Vacation closer to home — it cuts down on fuel emissions.
Change a light bulb. Replace regular incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps. The latter bulbs use 60 percent less energy and last 10 times longer.

Panasonic PT-AX100U 3LCD HD Home Theater Projector - Front View

At an MSRP of $2,999, the Panasonic PT-AX100U 3LCD projector offers lots of useful features and solid video performance that is normally reserved for projectors in higher price ranges. With a native pixel resolution of 1280x720 (720p), the PT-AX100U is HD-compatible. In addition, the video quality is excellent for a projector in this class; flesh tones, overall color saturation, and contrast levels provide a very natural looking image, with none of the usual LCD artifacts, such as the screen door effect. This level of performance is hard to find in other similarly-priced units currently on the market. .

Digital-Camera Buyer's Guide

Megapixels: Camera companies keep advertising more and more megapixels -- 10 is the new premium number this year. But unless you're blowing your pictures up to poster size, you don't need more than six or seven to get quality 4-x-6 or 8-x-10 prints.

Optical Viewfinder: As cameras get smaller, a feature that's often left off is an optical viewfinder (the window you hold your eye up to on the back of the camera). But a viewfinder comes in handy on a sunny day at the park when it's hard to see the LCD screen.

Image Stabilization: If your camera has a big optical zoom, you're definitely going to need image stabilization to guarantee an unblurry shot. And make sure it's optical stabilization, not electronic.

Autofocus Assist Lamp: Another feature that helps you shoot clear photos is a low red or green light that the camera shines whenever you prefocus (by holding the shutter release halfway down).

Lost in the Groupware Forest? Light a LAMP

Ever since the dawn of computing, us poor oppressed users have been asking for just one thing. It seems such a small thing: a shared calendar and contacts manager. Oh I know, a plain text file set to mode 0666 was good enough for grandma, but these days it's OK to want more. Just a simple way for us to easily share calendars and addresses with our simple, humble friends and co-workers.

But what did we get? We did not get our simple shared calendar and contacts, oh no. We were punished for our effrontery for even asking with awful punishments like Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange, and Novell GroupWise, which were larded with so many Features and Productivity Thingies they couldn't get out of their own way. But we were not silenced, and continued to politely clamor for what we really really wanted.
