Soybean insulation? Sheep dung greeting cards?
What if your new kitchen countertops could be made from discarded paper? Or your old electronics could biodegrade and return nutrients to the earth? Designers are already on it, searching out new green materials that move far beyond the neighbourhood recycling program. Helping out those designers is Material Connexion, a private, New York-based materials library that works with some of the biggest names in design. "A few years ago, the first thing designers said was, 'I want the coolest, most innovative new material,' " vice-president Andrew Dent says. "Now it's, 'I would like to produce something that is more sustainable.' " From its debut in 1997, Material Connexion now has locations in Bangkok, Cologne and Milan (http://www.materialconnexion.com).
Parents express concerns over preschool poisoning
ST. PETERSBURG - Two Pinellas County parents have pulled their children out of a local pre-school after their toddlers got sick from drinking toxic lamp oil. Tamika Roberson spent Wednesday morning picking up her son's blanket and other remaining belongings this morning. She says her son will not be returning to Preschool at the Point in St. Petersburg. "This was the last straw," says Roberson. "So he has to be removed from this school." Her 3-year old, Elijah, found an unlabeled bottle filled with lamp oil at the preschool and drank it yesterday, thinking it was juice. "You don't put toxic chemicals inside the bottles," says Roberson. "If you're going make a discovery project, you put it somewhere that if the children do get a hold of it. It won't harm them." Another toddler, Amerion Hart, also drank the oil and won't be returning to the school.
