Prison's structure makes lasting impression

The first morning Rodney Baird put his feet on the floor at the Sheridan prison, he could hear fellow inmates singing the "Brother to Brother" song, a motivational ditty with which they start the day.

"I remember thinking, 'What have I got myself into?' " said the 46-year-old Ridge Farm man. "It didn't take long to get with the program."

Fire victims' fatal error

AN elderly couple who died when flames ravaged their home near Buntingford declined the fire service's offer of a free smoke detector just two months before the blaze.

An inquest into the deaths of Denys and Muriel Winsor, both 86 and married for 57 years, also heard that paramedics visiting the couple on the morning of the fire smelled smoke in the home but were told it was nothing.

The Winsors died on December 14, 2006, unable to escape the blaze at The Homestead, Chipping.

At Wednesday's inquest it emerged that the couple had been visited by fire safety officers from Papworth, Cambs, in October 2006 and were offered a free smoke detector but refused.

At 5.55am on the morning of the fire, paramedics visited the couple, who were described by the coroner Edward Thomas as "living a very reclusive life".

Cassini Weekly Report (04142007)

NASA via BBSNews - 2007-04-20 -- The most recent spacecraft telemetry was acquired on Tuesday, April 17, from the Madrid tracking complex. The Cassini spacecraft is in an excellent state of health and all subsystems are operating normally. Information on the present position and speed of the Cassini spacecraft may be found on the "Present Position" web page.

Wednesday, April 11 (DOY 101):

The official input port occurred today as part of the S32 Science Operations Plan Update process. A Sequence Change Request (SCR) approval meeting was also held for S31. Fourteen SCRs were approved at this meeting. No major issues are expected with incorporating them into the sequence.

Cassini's magnetometer team has concluded that a leak in a helium lamp in one of two detectors on the magnetometer caused the loss of one of the detectors--the vector scalar helium detector-- after nearly nine years of flawless operations.

Of genies and magic lamps

It was a night of indulgence. The Times Classifieds Annual Party held at Le Meridien on Saturday (March 31) promised the wild mystic excesses of distant Arabia. Aptly themed ‘Arabian Nights', the ambience mixed the heady exotic charm of the Orient with the modern-day entertainment.

Kajal Wadhwa of MH1 and Zee fame took the centre stage as the hostess of the evening. The fun started up with the announcement of the annual Times Classifieds Awards 2006-07. The best performing advertisement agency went to Lehar Advertising for the second time in a row, with Devraha Communications and Mind Makers Communications taking up the first and second runners' up positions, respectively. The awards were handed over to the winners by Mr. C.R. Srinivasan, Director, Response, the Times Group.

Madrid 'to read' under stars

Madrid - Poems will hang from street lamps and bookstores will stay open until the wee hours next week as the Madrid region celebrates International Book Day, organisers said on Monday.

More than 600 writers, musicians and artists will join in next Monday's festivities, which feature 350 events such as round-table discussions, lectures and poetry readings, said Santiago Fisas, cultural affairs director for the Madrid regional government.

Public libraries and a total of 120 bookstores across the region will extend their hours to bring readers and authors together.

Spanish poet Antonio Gamoneda, recipient of the 2006 Cervantes Prize, the Spanish-speaking world's highest literary honour, will meet with high school and university students.

Fuencarral Street in downtown Madrid will be decked out with hanging books of poetry so pedestrians are surrounded by verse, Fisas said.
