Contemporary Table Lamps Magnifying Floor Lamp

Brighten your décor with lamps and shades

Improving lighting in a home can be as involved as bringing in a lighting designer or as simple as heading to a hardware store for a dimmer.

For those looking for minimal change, yet wanting a fresh look, changing a lampshade is one way to add another design element to a room.

Floor and table lamps create a cozy mood that can be enhanced by simply plugging the lamp into affordable dimmers that plug into the wall, available at most hardware stores.

"The room will feel a little warmer, cozy because you want to go sit next to that lamp and curl up," said Jeff Boone, a lighting consultant and manager at Lamps Plus in Bellevue. "If it's brightly lit, it will feel like activity."

And interesting lampshades are widely available at discount and high-end stores.

Exclusive apartments in best locations in Israel

As the Sabbath noon of May 15, 1948 turned to afternoon, and afternoon into evening, the mood in downtown Jerusalem grew from excitement to tumult. Despite the siege and the threat of shelling, people roamed the streets rejoicing. Revelers from an inglorious bucket brigade of trench diggers and hackers, I among them, frolicked down Jaffa Road to Ben Yehuda Street, whose upper section had been blasted by truck bombs.

A bonfire was ablaze in a giant crater, and youngsters were spinning around it in a feisty hora folk dance. One young man in red shorts, overwhelmed by the thrill of the hour, cartwheeled over to where some of us were standing, and hugged each in turn.

In Zion Square an old man with a trombone and a girl with a guitar were playing a spirited "Hava Nagilla" and, spying the violin case of one of our crowd called Leopold Mahler - a professional violinist and Holocaust survivor who never ever wanted to play again - persuaded him to unpack his instrument and join in.

Asian businesses urged to turn eco-friendly to succeed in West

SINGAPORE: Business executives in Asia have been warned of the urgent need to change practices contributing to global warming if they want to succeed in the Western marketplace.
“Climate change is not a northern problem," said Achim Steiner, executive director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). “It touches on every sector."
More than 600 business leaders were attending the Global Business Summit for the Environment, the first major international conference on business and the environment in Asia.
The event was organised by the UNEP to raise corporate environmental responsibility by bringing companies together with the UN and other agencies.
“If you want to be a global player, these issues will affect your global competitiveness," Steiner said.
“Every day we receive new evidence of the harm that human activities are inflicting on the environment," Steiner said.
