Badminton complex in broken-down state

KUBANG PASU: What was to have been a state-of-the-art facility to produce badminton players in the mould of the famous Sidek brothers is now in a broken-down state.

The building housing the "Tapak 1001 Gelanggang Rakyat" here is just a step away from caving in.

Two years ago, when the New Straits Times first highlighted its sorry state, there were hopes that the complex would be salvaged and that the programme to groom world-class players like Misbun, Razif, Jalani and Rashid Sidek could be revived.

"Not any more. The complex is now condemned," said Abdul Majid Mat Noor, the chairman of the Kampung Binjai village security and development committee.

"It is a waste of public funds considering it was set up to produce a pool of good badminton players for the country."
The facility was built at a cost of RM200,000 and it was opened by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mo- hamad 12 years ago.

The Evolution of Open Source

Much of the talk about enterprise open source software centers around its potential, with upbeat projections offered for the next year, the next five years, and beyond. But such forecasts overlook a simple fact: open source is already well-established in the enterprise. Moreover, adoption goes way beyond Linux. Here’s a look at the state of the penguin in information technology. The bottom line: the penguin is cool.

Wildcatters Defeat Gwinnett in OT Again

Beaumont, TX (April 20, 2007) Ben Thomson scored the game winning goal at 19:31 of the first overtime to send the Wildcatters to the South Division Finals as Texas beat Gwinnett 2-1 in front of 2,284 at Ford Arena. The Wildcatters defeated the Gwinnett Gladiators three games to one in the best of five South Division Semifinals and will face the Florida Everblades in the best of seven South Division Finals.

The two teams played a scoreless 40 minutes until Kevin Baker lit the lamp for his third goal of the playoffs. Baker netted a power play tally 6:17 into the third period to give the 'Catters a 1-0 lead. Andy Contois answered for Gwinnett at 16:02 of the third period to even the score.

For the second straight time, the game would move to overtime. With just 29 seconds remaining in the first overtime Ben Thomson beat Dave Caruso on the right wing side to send the 'Catters to the next round.

Developer wants steam engine to make permanent stop in LeClaire

Whether it gets derailed or on track is anyone's guess, but the owner of a 1924 ALCO Grand Trunk Western 8305, 0-8-0, hopes his steam engine can whistle into LeClaire.

Michael Mahler, a developer with LeClaire's Great River LC, hopes to bring the steam engine he bought in 2005 from Northwestern Steel in Sterling, Ill., to the scenic riverfront town and put it on a spur he'd lease from the railroad.

Some flat cars and a caboose could be added to create the look of a train stopped in LeClaire, and the train could be used for retail and museum space, Mr. Mahler said.

"Anything's possible," he said. "It could have a candy store, or even a diner. But, whatever it has would be a wonderful addition to LeClaire and a way to get one of those green signs that bring people in off the interstate.
